The highest-weighted category in the LEED scorecard. Strategies include reducing energy demand through building design, high-efficiency HVAC and lighting systems, and on-site or off-site renewable energy. Because it carries nearly a third of all available points, EA performance often determines certification level on its own.
The single highest-value individual credit in the entire rating system, awarded within Energy & Atmosphere based on percentage energy-cost savings over a code baseline, verified through whole-building energy simulation. Pursuing this credit early shapes nearly every other design decision on the project.
Covers ventilation, low-emitting materials, daylighting, thermal comfort, and acoustic performance. Rewards site selection near existing infrastructure, public transit, and mixed-use, walkable areas, along with bicycle facilities and reduced parking footprints. Because these credits are largely determined by site selection, they should be evaluated before a location is finalized, not after.
Rewards life-cycle impact reduction, environmental product declarations, responsibly sourced raw materials, and construction and demolition waste diversion. Requires early coordination with contractors and suppliers to track material data throughout procurement, not just at project close-out.
Rewards indoor and outdoor fixture and irrigation reduction, cooling tower water management, and whole-building water metering. Often one of the more cost-effective categories to maximize, since fixture and irrigation upgrades carry a relatively low cost per point earned.
Addresses heat island reduction, rainwater management, light pollution reduction, and protection of open space during site development. Closely tied to civil and landscape design decisions, making early-stage coordination with the design team essential to capturing these points.
Fundamental Commissioning is required of every LEED project; Enhanced Commissioning adds additional points within Energy & Atmosphere. An independent commissioning agent verifies that building systems actually perform as designed — consistently one of the highest-return strategies for catching costly system errors before occupancy.
Rewards pilot credits, exemplary performance beyond existing credit thresholds, and inclusion of a LEED Accredited Professional on the project team. A flexible category that can capture points a project has already earned elsewhere in the design.
Bonus points awarded for achieving credits USGBC has identified as environmental priorities for the project's specific geographic region. Essentially free points for a project already pursuing the right regional credits — worth checking before final submission.
